This is the website of Hanne Svarstad. As a sociologist I conduct research on how the environment is used and conserved, how various groups gain and lose from uses as well as from conservation, and how these things are presented (in discourses and narratives) by influential actors and by local people.

I study how areas and natural resources are used and conserved in localities in some African countries as well as in Norway and other parts of the global North, and how specific situations are influenced by global and national processes of economic activities and of efforts to conserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change.

On this webpage I list and make available many of my research publications (books, articles and some reports), op-eds and debates in Norwegian media (in Norwegian), and I have a blog page in Norwegian and one in English, respectively.
